Photography or Art of an ‘erotic’ nature is often misinterpreted. Erotica isn’t all nudity…it’s also mystery. It’s how you wear it, how you view it and how you perceive it. A good artist or photographer is one who can visually open your mind to an image, let you get lost in it, play a part in it…but more importantly…have the power to entice you back to it…again and again. That is very sexy, very erotic and the very reason we buy books and prints from our favorite photographers and artists. It’s also the reason I host this group…to recognize and uncover those talented artists you may not have seen before…but whose work you really should see…for it is ‘kick arse’

I am more than happy to say I cast one vote in this challenge and it was for the eventual winner Stretch 3 by  Frisson. I think the photograph is well shot, has a gorgeous natural model and is above all mysteriously sexy. Put those three together and you have one lethal blonde. Well done Terry and congratulations.

Something sweetly erotic…

A little anarchy in the U.K with Terry…

Tell us a little bit about the model in Stretch 3 and the environment you were shooting in?

The model in the picture is Lauren from Arkansas. We met through MySpace and she wanted some photos done for a web-site she is a part of. The idea was to shoot half the time for her pictures and the second half for mine. By the time we got to my stuff the temperatures had sky-rocketed and before long it was just too hot to continue shooting.   A couple of months later she insisted on traveling down to Louisiana to complete my half of the shoot. At the time my wife and I were homeless and staying temporarily in a friends trailer. The triler had a garage/shed/out-house full of junk and so we shot in there for a while before the poor light forced us to the doors at the front. As soon as we start shooting there I knew I was getting the images I had been wanting.

From your profile…
I reject the catwalk/playboy stereotype of beauty, I believe beauty is not confined to one body shape or ethnicity. Tell us about your most unusual nude model?

I don’t think I could describe any of my models as ‘unusual’, they are all very beautiful women just in different ways. If I have to choose one model I would choose Anna,  simply because of the fact that I had only met her 30 minutes before in a bar and suddenly we were at the back of the building shooting topless/nude shots. Very fun and very spontaneous. I do find some models more difficult to shoot of course. I find shooting tall thin girls more of a challenge than those with a fuller figure. When I look for potential models I start off trying to find someone between 5-0 and 5-3 and weighing between 130-150lbs. Living in Shreveport however means I can’t be so selective, and in some ways it has helped me because I am forced to work harder on my images.

Do you miss being in the U.K?

On some levels I certainly do, I miss the beer, and the football (soccer), and I like the British girls attitude towards nudity and it’s place in the world of art. Here in America there is a lot more opportunities to make something out of photography. Americans appreciate a well done portrait far more than the British and are willing to pay a reasonable fee for you to do that. On the downside, living here in the bible belt means there are fewer models to choose from, and those that are here usually have a ‘no nudity’ policy. It has forced me to work even harder on my work just to convince models further afield that I am worth the long journey to shoot.

What plans do you have for future shoots?

March is going to be a busy month for me. I have recently purchased a new lens which I am itching to put through it’s paces, so I have set up some time-for-print shoots in the coming weeks to familiarize myself with it. Sadly no nude models were forthcoming so it will simply be straight glamor and fashion work. My next nude work will probably be with Keira Grant who is on Model Mayhem and is from Dallas. She will be stopping by the first week in June on her way to New Orleans. I’m sure you will see some of the results submitted to the Blue Room afterwards.

Your Camera of choice?

I currently shoot with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (350D). For an entry level SLR it is superb, and at the time gave me more megapixels per buck than anything out on the market. My camera of choice? Don’t get me started. I’ve looked at the higher end of the market and I don’t think I will be buying anything in that price bracket soon. A wife and four children tend to drain any pocket change I have left at the end of the month. So my most likely next camera purchase will be a Canon EOS 5D (12.8Mp). A few picture sales here on Red Bubble should help towards that.

Do you travel extensively and what is your favorite country to visit?

I don’t travel that much at all really, although I still have a dream of touring the USA some day, three trips to cover the east, west and then central USA. The best country I have ever been to has to be Switzerland, get up in those mountains and you can taste the air it is so clean.

Where would you like your photography to have taken you in say 10 years time?

In ten years I would like to have been published a few times, have a thriving boudoir photography business for the wives and girlfriends of this world, and to be putting the final touches to the first of my American photography tours.

Are you listening to anything right now? And what is your favorite music style?

The Sex Pistols were the dogs bollox (UK to US translation: “the greatest”) when I was 12 years old, then it was Metallica before moving onto Supergrass, then Radiohead, and now it has to be Muse. I like lyrics that mean something, and if it has a little angst or cynicism thrown in then even better. I also enjoy music that has a style all of it’s own such as Portishead or Moloko. My favorite song of the moment? “Ladies and Gentlemen..(the let’s go out tonights)” by Butch Walker. Probably because it has these lyrics
“Gimme a razor,
Not to cut myself and talk about it
But to shave off your beard,
Your look better without it”

How do you like the Blue Room?

I love the diversity in the Blue Room. Different syles, concepts, mediums and even gender to challenge your own ideas of what art is and isn’t, and what is or isn’t erotic. My favorite piece at the moment is “Line, Curved” by Vellu I think it’s inspiring.

This challenge was easy. All I asked was that each entrant submit their most favorite erotic piece from their portfolios. There were alot of submissions…80 to be exact. The challenge for me was to pick my favorite 20 out of that 80…to be finalists. Not an easy task and what I chose may not have been what the guy next door would have chosen…but then again, the guy next door is probably a frack who doesn’t host this group.  So 20 gorgeous pieces of eye candy (and awesome work from all of you) ended up on the voting page for the ‘Orgy Challenge’ and you little voyeurs voted in the eventual winner. 

tlimages has been a member of the Blue Room for quite sometime now and I remember moderating his work (in particular the series “Lovers 9″ is part of) and thinking ‘oh man..this is still cinematography at its erotic best’. I was completely besotted by the couple he had used in his work. How so totally natural both of them were in body and soul and their obvious passion and commitment to each other and to the photographer. When you browse the rest of his works you have to applaud him for the confidence and bravery he shows in his craft and the obvious confidence his models have in him.

Can you explain to the rest of the group how and why you decided to photograph and put together the series “Lovers”?

 This “Lovers” series actually began with a suggestion from my favourite model and muse. I had photographed her on 6 previous assignments and she thought that it would be a lovely idea to capture her making love with her boyfriend – the real thing, no acting or posing. We agreed that the objective was not to produce porn images, but to capture the passion and intimacy of two lovers uniting their bodies and pleasuring each other. I felt rather honoured to be invited into their intimate space, and I do hope that I achieved our objective.

How have art sites such as redbubble treated you and your work? Are the rules and regulations they impose on nudity and erotica fair do you think?

Although I have not displayed these images elsewhere, I must say that I found RB to be quite open and liberal in their views of nudity, particularly the display of female genitalia – even though I disagree with their censorship of some of my images that captured the lovers performing cunnilingus. In my humble opinion, those censored images (and others that I did not bother to upload) were very tastefully and artistically rendered and were therefore art in the truest sense of the word. So, no, I don’t think that the RB rules are fair.

Which other areas of photography or art do you like to dabble in?

Other areas that I dabble in? I love landscapes, and have also done some funky stuff with lensbaby and pin-hole photography.

Have you ever exhibited your work?

I’ve actually sold some of my landscapes at several artshows. Unfortunately, most of the images that I’ve posted in the Blue Room would not be appropriate or permitted in the artshows.

A favorite redbubble artist you’d like to share?

There are so many excellent and gifted artists in RB and it’s difficult to pick one! That said, I would venture to name Crystal French. I am quite bowled over by her courage and honesty in taking and displaying those wonderful images of her own vulva. It is very refreshing and kind of in-your-face. Bold, independent, confident!

Challenge # 3 was about being Nude in the Wilderness (great song if you’re a Dog Fashion Disco fan: D ) The challenge was to present Erotica or Nudity in the great outdoors and John Tisbury did just that with his beautiful photograph. His work is a pleasure to view in it’s tasteful styling and beauty coupled with his obvious talent as a photographer. I’d also like to give kudos to all the entrants…your work is so beautiful, you should be proud of yourselves and I encourage you to keep entering these challenges.

Some words of wisdom….

Tell us a little bit about ‘Nude on the Beach’ Where was the location, have you worked with the model before?

It was shot at Sillouth, Cumbria, Lake District. A very cold windy November day. Model is Maria Eriksson who I’ve worked with many times, she’s a super model to work with.

You live in the Uk…have you travelled overseas?

I’ve shot in Spain with models and planning another trip in March of this year with two models. Also been invited to come over and give some Masterclasses in Australia later this year for the Red Bubble Australian Adult Photographic Workshops and the Adult Group so I’m looking forward to that.

Who do you admire most as a Photographer?

I take inspiration from many photographers but no-one in particular. I like any photographer who is inventive, tries things out and works at their art, pushing boundaries and continually improving.

Your favorite photograph..yours or someone elses?

That’s a tough one, I love looking back at my old work and comparing it with my latest work, I always see a step change and improvement. So I guess the last photograph I take is probably my favourite. I also love some of Cartier-Bresson’s shots, his decisive moment is what photography is all about, capturing that split second that most of us miss and pass by.

Has a photoshoot ever gone wrong for you?

In the middle of a commissioned shoot we had a power cut. No worries I thought, I’ll get my battery powered flash out and carried on. About 45 mins later I suddenly noticed that the main room light had been on for what must have been ages and I’d been struggling in the dark with no modelling light in semi darkness.

Your favorite music?

Whatever my model or customer wants. I don’t really mind, if my model has their favourite music on they relax and the shots start coming.

What inspires you?

I take inspiration from all around me, it’s surprising where ideas and triggers come from. Billboards, magazine adverts, television, anything really. I like to try new things and new new experiances, this stimulates creativity.

A one on one with Jessica…

Tell us a little bit about the winning piece ‘Androgorgeus’. How difficult a shoot was it and how did you came up with the name?

The photo shoot for “Androgorgeous” wasn’t too difficult. The models did their own hair, makeup and what little wardrobe they had on. They are best friends in real life so there was some chemistry already there and they both have a lot of modeling experience. We had an idea develop as I took photos that since they looked kind of like twins it would be interesting to have them look very intimate with each other. The end result was some kind of gorgeous androgyny, which I find to be very attractive. So I developed a merging of the two words and came up with “Androgorgeous”.

For such a young women your work is quite brilliant. Where do you see your photography taking you in say…10 years time?

Thank you for the compliment! In 10 years it would be a dream come true if I could have my photography reach far and wide through galleries, art shows, publications, etc. Ideally I would like to be making some kind of income through my work and I would like to be widely recognized for it. I think that isn’t too much to ask and is a common dream we all share as artists. Most importantly though, in 10 years I want to see to it that I continue making art and don’t stop.

You’ve been on redbubble for some time now…how does it differ from other sites such as Deviant Art?

Redbubble has been a very pleasant art experience for me. It is different from other art communities I have been on in the sense that people here seem to be generally more kind to me. Everyone has been welcoming, supportive and friendly and nobody here is overly competitive or critical. I think the people make the community and that holds very true for Redbubble. That and the art here is diverse and really fun to look at! There are some brilliant artists here!

Your favorite piece of art on redbubble?

Oh that’s really impossible to answer. I can’t pick just one, there are too many amazing artworks here. But if you really wanna know what kind of art gets me going, take a look at my favorites!

Your photographic influences?

Life experiences first and foremost always influences me. Secondly, to list some names: Floria Sigismondi, Chad Michael Ward, Visioluxus, LithiumPicnic, Kimothy, Aiko273, Harmony Nicholas, etc. And thirdly, my own crazy mind has quite an impact on the images I create.
Dreams, reality, emotions.. they all mold into one.

If you could set the next Blue Room challenge, what would it be?

That’s a tough question… hmm…. since Valentines Day is coming up, how about Passion between two people?

I could not think of a more worthy winner for our first Blue Room Challenge, than Krisso and his gorgeous, edgy, wickedly erotic piece called 212(4)Blue. I asked for something which would leave the viewer wanting more and I asked for something blue. Krisso gave us that with superb artistic styling and direction. Krisso…I have been watching you for sometime now and I have watched you grow into an amazing photographer and artist. You are a sweetheart and I wish you well. A one on one with Mr Krisso……

1. The piece you chose…I asked for your best and you entered this one…why this particular piece?

I always have trouble choosing between work, I tried to enter a second piece but I couldn’t. I’m cheeky like that : ) I ended up choosing this piece because for me the image still leaves allot for the viewers imagination. It creates questions and a story and encourages the viewer to actually think about the image rather than just saying “Hey here’s a bunch of naked chicks! Hot hu?”… I think finding your own way to the best bits is much better than being obviously shown : )

2. How far do you think your Photography has progressed in the last 2 years? And what or who is inspiring you?

It’s difficult for me to say how far I think my photography has improved as I’m very critical of my own work. I’ve been working allot on my post production and getting out of the studio and working with natural light.
As for my inspirations, that’s a very long list, starting here with Redbubble. At the start of last year I had a major lack of inspiration and was considering throwing in photography but then RB gave me just the kick I needed. I find inspiration in just about everything, from film and music to rain and other people. But most of all I have to say my Mum and Dad, they seriously rock!

3. You’ve been living in the UK, tell us a little bit about that.

What can I say about the UK???… Well I’ve been living in Bath which is not really representative of the rest of the UK as it’s a very wealthy city with lots of wealthy older people who just like to eat out and gossip. It is a beautiful city though and I have grown quite fond of living here, however a move to London is due quite soon. It’s been a pretty hard adjustment, things are very different and I’m having to work an insane amount of hours as a waiter which is putting quite a hold on my photography, but I now have enough money to put on an exhibition here in March and then who knows from there.

4. Things you like to do other than take delicious photographs of gorgeous women.

Outside of photography, I’m an actor but again that is something I havent been able to pursue much here, but I’m hoping to change that soon. I do a little bit of singing (nothing serious). Otherwise I like to get out when I can and go exploring, finding new things and doing stuff I’ve never done before. Movies are good to!

5. What do you like to eat?

My favorite food???… Well I’m a vegetarian so I don’t eat red meat or fish… Right now I’m loving Nepalese food… Mmmmmm, yummy : – )

6. If you could set the next Blue Room challenge..what would it be?

Sex without obvious nudity

7. Music inspires us all…who are your favorite artists?

This is the impossible question, all I can say is right now I’m playing Otis Redding. I should mention my friends bands Ward Avenue and Juke Kartel.

Black and white is a number of monochrome forms. Most forms of visual technology start out in black and white, then slowly evolve into color as technology progresses.
